Training for a New Occupation
What is the Training Program?
Eligible individuals can receive funds for training that will lead to employment in an in demand occupation.
If eligible, individuals can receive up to $15,000 for training expenses such as tuition, fees, book, and supplies as well as support services such as mileage reimbursement, car repairs, license fees, etc.
Who is Eligible?
There are 2 sources of funding: adults and dislocated workers. Basic eligibility requirements for both adults and dislocated workers include the following:
- Must be over age 18.
- Males who were required to register for selective service must provide documentation of registration.
- Income guidelines are reviewed only if the applicant is employed at the time of application.

In order to qualify as a dislocated worker, the individual must be laid off, eligible for unemployment benefits AND be "unlikely to return to his/her previous occupation."

The individual must have sought employment through “Core” Services, which are the basic job search services provided through the Seneca One Stop.
The individual must have had a discussion with a case manager/employment counselor employment interests, training strategies, and review of test assessment scores.
The individual will establish, with staff assistance or independently, an employment goal, which is recorded on an Individual Employment Plan (IEP). If additional course work is desired outside of the IEP, it must be approved on an individual basis by an agreement between the County Job and Family Services and the One Stop operator, prior to the commencement of the course work.
The individual must possess the skills and abilities to successfully complete the training program such as but not limited to:
- TABE Reading and Math Scores of 9th grade or above.
- Meets training provider’s minimum requirements.
- Driving record or background check.
- Exceptions to the above may be made due to the individual’s circumstances (i.e. learning or physical disability) as determined by the Seneca County DJFS staff.
The program will not consider funding any training above a baccalaureate degree from a college or university.
Students must enroll in classes at least half-time to be eligible for federal PELL grants, if attending for a certificate or degree; exceptions may be made on an individual basis.
Students must apply for financial aid and provide a copy of their Financial Aid Award letter. The training provider will reduce the direct costs to be paid with WIA funds by any financial aid received.
Students must have a high school diploma, a GED, or have the ability to benefit from the training/course work.
An applicant is responsible for completing all necessary documents, furnishing all available facts and information, and cooperating in the eligibility determination process. All needed information is subject to verification. The applicant also must cooperate with exploring available community resources.
